What is Global Warming?

Global Warming means the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near surface air and oceans in several years in the world.

It is a very common problem in the world. It affects many things like humans, animals and plants. It is increased every century so the world will be hotter than now and the life will not be possible. The governments in all countries must do any thing to stop this problem before it increases and then it will not stop. This warming is one of many kinds of climate change that the Earth has gone through in the past and will continue to go through in the future.

The greenhouse effect and ozone holes are related to global warming because they are contributed to increase the temperature.

Causes of Global Warming

There are many causes of global warming. Greenhouse gases, cars and fossil fuels are just a few of the factors that cause global warming. I will now examine some causes about this statement.

One of the most important reasons for this problem is greenhouse gases. What I mean is that the greenhouse gases traps heat from the sun so the temperature rises in the world. A second important issue is cars. This is because cars release CO2 and many people are making short trips by their cars instead of walking or using public transport. Another point is fossil fuels. To elaborate, fossil fuels burn to run cars and trucks, heat homes and power factories. Finally, burning forests are also reason to increase the temperature.

One Cause

Most greenhouses look like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. They work by trapping heat from the sun.

Energy from the sun heats the earth surface, in turn; the earth radiates the energy back into space. There are many greenhouse gases like: water vapor, carbon dioxide and other gases. Those gases trap some of the outgoing energy and heat the earth. Greenhouse gases are gaseous components of that atmosphere that contribute to the global warming. Without these greenhouse gases, the temperature will be lower than usual (-18ْْ C) and the life will be not possible.

Effects of Global Warming

However, there are many causes of the global warming, there are also some effects. It affects many things like humans, animals and plants and it also changes climate and raises sea level. I will now examine some effects about global warming.

One of the most important effects is the greenhouse effect. What I mean is that it can make the earth warmer than usual and this will cause problems for humans, plants and animals. Another important effect is changing climate. To elaborate, worldwide precipitation over land has increased 1% and sea level has risen 4-8 inches over the last century. Finally, air pollution will increase. This is because people use more carbon dioxide for human activities like using cars and powering factory.

One Effect

The earth's temperature is rising every year and ice at the poles may begin to melt. This will raise see levels at the South Pole or floating on water like at the North Pole.

When water is in the form of ice, it takes more space than water. Ice floating on water would make see levels higher than when the ice is melted.

The Arctic Ocean ice cap is shrinking in summer to the smallest, it has ever been in modern size. In winter the cold has not been refreezing it as extensively as before. The sea ice is habitat for the polar bear, penguin and seals so if it is melted, these animals will not find a place to live.

The UAE and Global Warming

I was interested in how global warming relates to my country so I did some research. In the first article I found, at http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/07/05/15/10125502.html, I read that Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that Dubai is looking to use natural power (solar, water and wind powers) to help meet its electricity needs instead of using oil and gas. I agree with him because the natural power will reduce global warming.

In the second article I found, at http://www.ourplanet.com/imgversn/123/nahyan.html, I read that the UAE was still a developing country and it had a lot of oil so it had to use oil carefully because oil increased global warming. The global warming is not only effect the environment in the UAE but it affects all planet.

Individual Action

Global warming may be a big problem but there are many things we can do to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the atmosphere. Now, I will talk about some ways that can help our world.

First of all, people can use one car to go to work. What I mean is that five people can ride together in one car instead of driving five cars to work. Second, they can save energy by using the bus, riding a bike and walking. Also, reading books about global warming is very important because they have a lot of information that can tell people what they have to do. Finally, growing plants are very good to reduce greenhouse gases because they absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
